The Beginners Guide to Skincare

The beginners guide to skincare, starting with our organic donkey milk soap and skincare range.

The skin is our body’s largest organ, and it is important we look after it! However, it can be overwhelming not knowing where to start - (understanding skincare is hard, even for experts!). Knowing the purpose and use for each product doesn’t have to be complicated. We have curated a list of skincare basics to make the job a little easier and less overwhelming.

Common goals of all skincare products:

All skincare products share a common goal - to ensure your skin is soft, supple and silky smooth. However, understanding the main objectives of each skincare product is essential to know exactly what topical treatments will maintain your glowing complexion. Skincare products aim to:

  • Prevent damage from environmental factors and free radicals, such as sun radiation and pollution.
  • Optimising hydration, cell turnover rate and barrier function through minimising irritation.
  • Assist in repairing prior damage and scarring that occurs on the skin.

Knowing the specific purposes of each skincare product will help you understand the function of each item, and make sure you’re selecting the right products for your skin…but what is the purpose of each product, and what’s the difference between them?

1. CLEANSER

Cleanser is the number one - and most important step in all skincare routines! Removing makeup and daily build-up from the skin is the first step to achieving a glowing complexion.  Cleanser is formulated to remove dead skin cells, sebum, oils and skin pollutants - preventing them from accumulating on the skin and causing unwanted breakouts. Cleansing the skin once every morning and night is essential to allow the skin to regenerate and rejuvenate, providing a clean surface for makeup or skincare products.

There is a wide range of cleansers available for varying skin types; normal; dry; oily; or combination. Click here to take our quick skin-type quiz, which will allow you to refine your search for the cleanser that best suits your skin.

2. EXFOLIATOR

Exfoliating is the process of removing of the outermost layer of dead skin cells through chemical or physical abrasion, to expose a smooth layer of new cells. Exfoliator should be applied directly after cleanser, however only 2-3 times a week.

Skin cells turnover every 28 days, however, as we age our skin cell turnover rate decreases, making the skin more vulnerable to fine lines and wrinkles. Exfoliating the skin assists in the skin cell turnover process and is essential to ensuring smooth, rejuvenated skin. So don’t hate…exfoliate!

3. SERUM

Serum is a skincare product that is applied after cleansing, before moisturising. It delivers powerful ingredients and antioxidants to the skin that is absorbed quickly, and locked into the skin by moisturiser. Serum is made of small molecules that penetrate deeply into the skin and deliver a high concentration of active ingredients. This makes it the perfect product for targeted treatments that address specific skincare concerns - such as wrinkles, dryness or breakouts. Serums are often skin type-specific, knowing your skin type will make sure you find the correct serum to treat your skincare concerns and ensure a beautiful, glowing complexion!

4. MOISTURISER

Moisturisers are emulsions or water and oil that create a protective barrier of hydration on the skin, locking in moisture and replenishing the skin. Moisturiser protects the skin barrier, and minimises fine lines and wrinkles by keeping the skin plump and smooth. It is essential in maintaining sebum production and stopping the skin from the over production of oil, which accumulates on the skin and causes breakouts… that no one wants!

Just like all skincare, moisturisers are specific to skin types, thus, knowing your skin type is essential to finding a moisturiser that will work for both you and your skin. Click here to view our donkey milk moisturiser.
