Haircare Myths...Busted!

Haircare Myths...Busted!

We’ve debunked 5 haircare misconceptions; how many are you familiar with?

We’ve all fallen for the strange but said-to-be true haircare miracles to make our hair grow faster, thicker and shinier. With an abundance of tutorials, new haircare products and “fake news” out there, it’s time for us to separate fact from fiction. If you’ve found yourself falling for some of the myths below…Don’t worry! You’re not alone, these myths have been around for decades, passed between generations of families. We’ve demystified and debunked 5 of the most common haircare misconceptions, and even included a few nifty tips and tricks on how to care for your hair - scientifically proven!

MYTH #1: You should wash your hair daily.

It is commonly believed that washing your hair daily will clean the hair and nourish the scalp, however, daily washes can actually strip the hair of its natural oils and dehydrate the scalp, causing breakage and damage. How frequently you wash your hair will depend on your hair type and lifestyle, however, you should aim to do a full wash 2-3 times a week - but, if your hair is visibly dirty it is totally fine to wash it when necessary.

Haircare specialists state “If hair is visibly oily, scalp is itching, or there's flaking due to dirt, it is important to do a full wash when required.” Letting the hair breathe between washes is paramount to ensure the scalp can regulate oil balances and promotes less exposure to potentially irritating chemicals which leads to better textured hair and less need for styling products! When washing the hair, simply apply a small dollop of shampoo followed by conditioner and rinse

MYTH #2: You need to wash your hair with hot water.

Using hot water to wash your hair regularly can cause it to become porous and brittle, leading to increased breakage and damage. "Use lukewarm or cold water to wash your hair, because hot water can dehydrate hair", advises hair specialist Gui Cassolari. Hot water can cause hair follicles and skin pores on the scalp to weaken which ultimately weakens the hair root and can cause hair fall. Rinsing your hair with cold water after washing with a lukewarm temperature will close the hair cuticle and strengthen the hair.

MYTH #3: Split ends can be repaired.

Split ends are strands of hair that split in two, causing damage and thinning to the hair cuticle - the protective outer layer of the hair.  Split ends occur when the hair becomes dry or damaged…while damage can occur from environmental factors, most damage occurs as a result of chemical treatments. Despite what some products may advertise, you cannot repair a split end, as the protective layer of the hair has become compromised and weakened. Unfortunately the only way to cure split ends is to cut them off… but don’t stress! While you may lose some of your length, your hair will have a much fuller, revived and healthier look.

MYTH #4: You DON’T need a haircare routine!

Implementing a haircare routine is crucial in order to maintain nourished, hydrated and healthy hair. We can spend years perfecting our skincare routines and fine-tuning which products work best, and its often at the cost of our haircare routine.  But it doesn’t have to be complicated! Begin your haircare routine by cleansing the hair of dead tissue and product build-up, followed by conditioning. Rinse with lukewarm water and use a towel to gently pat dry. Next apply a product that will lock in your hairs moisture and maintain hydration until the next wash. Finish the routine by detangling the hair and brushing out any tangles or knots. Detangling the hair when wet will minimise any hair breakage and make it easier to style when dry.

MYTH #5: Organic products aren’t good for you hair.

Organic skincare is formulated from natural ingredients and does not contain harmful preservatives such as sulphates and parabens, which can cause hair breakage and future damage. Some may be sceptical… but never fear! Organic haircare products have been proven to preserve colouring on the hair and provide nourishment that does not chemically damage the hair follicle/cuticle, making it the perfect solution for those with irritable/sensitive scalps. Consider this myth…busted!
