Healthy Skin Habits

donkey milk soap benefits

Finding a beauty regime that suits not only your skin, but your schedule, can be difficult. However, good skincare does not have to come at all costs. Many believe that spending a fortune on cosmetics is the key to achieving a flawless complexion, however, most people are unaware that healthy, beautiful skin begins with five simple beauty habits. Skincare routines don’t have to be tedious and expensive, adopting 5 manageable, healthy habits can make a big difference in your skin. Here’s how…

Habit #1: Beauty sleep

Getting enough sleep is beauty 101…That’s right, beauty sleep is real! It’s a common misconception that a beauty regime is strictly skincare, however the skin is impacted by nearly every aspect of our life - including sleep. Getting your eight hours is essential in ensuring your body has time to repair and facilitate skin cell turn over. Skin cell turnover is the continual process where the body generates new skin cells to replace the dead - when we sleep the body’s metabolic rate (chemical processes) increases while we sleep, meaning sleep is absolutely necessary for skin cell turnover!

Your body requires rest in order to facilitate collagen production, which is the protein responsible for maintaining the skin’s elasticity and hydration—minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. So – next time you plan on staying up late…go to sleep! Your skin will thankyou.

Habit #2: Healthy Diet

There may be some truth to “we are what we eat!” Our skin needs essential vitamins and nutrients to remain healthy. Maintaining a balanced and nutritional diet is responsible for maintaining flawless skin. Nutritional foods, such as broccoli, spinach, and tomato, are high in antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect the skin against oxidative damage caused by environmental aggressors and free radicals - eat your vegetables!

Nutritional balance is also necessary for maintaining healthy blood circulation - foods rich in fibres and vitamins improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to skin cells, therefore improving your skin's appearance from the inside out!

Habit #3: Crucial Cleansing

Cleansing the skin is required to facilitate the removal of dirt, oil and unwanted build-ups that cause nasty breakouts and, sometimes, acne. Throughout the day the skin on your face is continually covered with bacteria, pollutants, dirt, and old (dead) skin cells. Routinely cleansing the face is required to “wash away the day” and remove any pollutants or harmful bacteria that resides on your skin—Providing a clean, clear surface for your skincare routine.

Exfoliating the skin assists in removing the dead cells on the outer most layer of the skin, increasing the rate of skin cell turnover by removing any dead cells that are making your complexion appear dull and dry. Exfoliation also assists in boosting blood circulation and lymphatic drainage - making it a ‘healthy-habit’ everyone should adopt.

Habit #4: Moisturising

Moisturisers ‘trap’ water in the skin, temporarily masking tiny lines and creases while stabilising the epidermis. This reduces the chance of developing extreme dryness or oiliness, which can lead to skin conditions such as acne.  The skin needs a layer of moisture to protect against harmful environmental factors—if the skin is unprotected, normal protective barriers and correct pH levels of the skin can be disrupted, resulting in breakouts and skin abnormalities. Hydrating the skin is essential for maintaining a dewy, hydrated appearance all day, everyday.

Habit #5 …Relaxing!

Relaxation, although easier said than done, plays an essential role in maintaining flawless skin. Chronic stress increases the production of stress-related hormones such as cortisol, meaning the skins oil glands are sent into ‘overdrive’, producing more sebum than necessary. This oil mixes with dead skin cells and breakout-causing bacteria, which can lead to acne. Adult skin is more prone to build-up of dead skin cells as the rate of skin cell turnover decreases gradually over time. So, take a deep breath and relax- for your skin!
